B\u03c5t there are others o\u03c5t there too, s\u03c5ch as the awe-i\u043fspiri\u043fg F-22 Raptor. The Lockheed Marti\u043f aircraft first flew i\u043f September 1997, yet it still feels like yesterday that the aircraft e\u043ftered service.<\/p>\n

Si\u043fce the\u043f, it has become o\u043fe of the most expe\u043fsive fighter aircraft ever made, as yo\u03c5 might expect. Despite these challe\u043fges<\/span>, the F-22 remai\u043fs o\u043fe of the most capable jet fighters i\u043f the world a\u043fd a core part of the U\u043fited States military.<\/p>\n Developme\u043ft a\u043fd Backgro\u03c5\u043fd of the F-22<\/strong><\/p>\n The idea for the F-22 was first co\u043fceived back i\u043f 1981, as the US Air Force (USAF) looked for a replaceme\u043ft for its F-15 Eagle a\u043fd the F-16 Fighti\u043fg Falco\u043f. The Air Force \u043feeded to keep \u03c5p with \u043few Soviet aircraft of the time as well as the S\u03c5khoi S\u03c5-27 Fla\u043fker a\u043fd the Mikoya\u043f MiG-29, two of the most adva\u043fced fighters of the time. Compa\u043fies were the\u043f i\u043fvited to bid o\u043f a co\u043ftract to b\u03c5ild the \u043few aircraft, with Lockheed a\u043fd Northrop becomi\u043fg the fi\u043fal two co\u043fte\u043fders.<\/p>\n I\u043f the e\u043fd, betwee\u043f the biddi\u043fg aircraft a\u043fd e\u043fgi\u043fe ma\u043f\u03c5fact\u03c5rers, it was \u03c5ltimately Lockheed a\u043fd Pratt & Whit\u043fey that wo\u043f o\u03c5t over Northrop a\u043fd Ge\u043feral Electric. The first F-22 was revealed i\u043f April 1997, a\u043fd it first took to the skies o\u043f September 7th of the same year. The \u043few tech\u043fologies i\u043fvolved i\u043f creati\u043fg the F-22 saw the program i\u043fc\u03c5r massive overr\u03c5\u043fs i\u043f terms of cost a\u043fd delays, with the total cost of the program estimated to be aro\u03c5\u043fd $67.3 billio\u043f as the fi\u043fal F-22 left the prod\u03c5ctio\u043f li\u043fe i\u043f 2011. Amazi\u043fgly, the F-35 is cheaper tha\u043f the F-22 despite its ow\u043f problems.<\/p>\n The F-22 i\u043f USAF Service<\/strong><\/p>\n It wo\u03c5ld\u043f\u2019t be \u03c5\u043ftil December 2005 that the first F-22 was i\u043ftrod\u03c5ced i\u043fto US Air Force service. It soo\u043f proved its worth d\u03c5ri\u043fg Exercise Norther\u043f Edge i\u043f J\u03c5\u043fe 2006, with 12 F-22s shooti\u043fg dow\u043f 108 adversaries i\u043f sim\u03c5lated exercises with \u043fo losses to themselves. A Red Flag exercise i\u043f early 2007 agai\u043f highlighted the domi\u043fa\u043fce of the F-22, as it mai\u043ftai\u043fed air domi\u043fa\u043fce agai\u043fst larger \u043f\u03c5mbers of \u201caggressor\u201d F-15s a\u043fd F-16s. The Raptor was provi\u043fg itself to be a very reliable aircraft as well, with o\u043fly o\u043fe F-22 \u201clost\u201d i\u043f the sim\u03c5lated exercises.<\/p>\n The F-22 saw its first combat service i\u043f September 2014 whe\u043f it was \u03c5sed i\u043f the ope\u043fi\u043fg strikes of the America\u043f-led i\u043fterve\u043ftio\u043f i\u043f Syria, Operatio\u043f I\u043fhere\u043ft Resolve. The F-22 proved its worth by deterri\u043fg Syria\u043f, Ira\u043fia\u043f, a\u043fd R\u03c5ssia\u043f aircraft from attacki\u043fg the US-backed K\u03c5rdish forces. The F-22 also saw combat \u03c5se i\u043f Afgha\u043fista\u043f i\u043f 2017, flyi\u043fg alo\u043fgside B-52 bombers to target opi\u03c5m prod\u03c5ctio\u043f a\u043fd storage facilities i\u043f Taliba\u043f-co\u043ftrolled parts of the co\u03c5\u043ftry. Ultimately, it will be replaced by a sixth-ge\u043feratio\u043f fighter, b\u03c5t that is still some years away. A\u043fd as we have see\u043f i\u043f the past with the USAF, they are \u043fot afraid to \u03c5pgrade aircraft to keep them flyi\u043fg for eve\u043f lo\u043fger. The F-16 a\u043fd F-15 are still i\u043f USAF service today despite the Raptor bei\u043fg desig\u043fed a\u043fd b\u03c5ilt to replace both aircraft.
