The film was released on March 9, 2018, to negative reviews and was a box office bomb, grossing $32 million against an estimated budget of $35 million. In 1992, a Category 5 hurricane named “Andrew” struck the town of Gulfport, Alabama. Will and Breeze Rutledge are evacuating from a devastating hurricane with their father. However, their truck gets stuck after avoiding a fallen tree, and they are forced to take shelter in a nearby house. While trying to save the truck from being blown away, strong winds blow a water tank off and crush their father.

In 2018, another Category 5 hurricane named “Tammy” approaches Gulfport. Federal Reserve Treasury employee Casey Corbyn is ordered by co-worker Randy Moreno to summon Breeze, who works in maintenance, and her brother Will, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, to fix a generator at a cash storage facility.

While she is out of the facility, renegade Treasury employees led by Connor Perkins infiltrate the facility and take Moreno hostage. Their plan is to steal $600 million, and Perkins enlists computer hackers Sasha and Frears to crack the safe’s code. Unable to decode it, Perkins realizes that Corbyn may have changed it, so he sends his men to find her. Sasha and Frears resort to a brute force attack using the town’s transmission tower.

As Corbyn and Breeze drive back to the facility, they encounter the mercenaries, and Corbyn engages in a shootout with them. Will helps her escape in his Storm Research Vehicle, the Dominator, but Breeze is left behind and taken hostage, forced to fix the generator.

Will is distraught to learn that his brother is in danger. Determined to save him, he and Corbyn meet with Sheriff Jimmy Dixon at his station. Unfortunately, Dixon reveals himself to be one of Perkins’s accomplices and attempts to take Will and Corbyn hostage. Corbyn shoots the sheriff, and they escape. As Dixon and one of his deputies chase them, Will attempts to ram their car with his Dominator. Realizing that the tower is being used to decode the vault’s code, Will and Corbyn attempt to topple it just before the decryption is complete. Perkins’ men discover them and exchange gunfire, but they escape. Dixon turns on Perkins, confronting him about a failed heist during the storm earlier. When Dixon demands to collect all the money, Perkins shoots him dead and convinces Dixon’s men to go find Corbyn.

While robbing a mall, Corbyn calls Perkins and makes a deal to release Moreno and Breeze as long as she opens the safe and takes the money. When Perkins asks where the deal will be made, Corbyn tells him to meet them at the Gulfport Mall. Meanwhile, Will and Corbyn plan to shoot the glass roof, causing the mercenaries to be sucked out through the roof. After Will talks to Breeze, who has arrived with the mercenaries, Corbyn shoots at the glass roof, sucking the mercenaries out into the storm as planned. Corbyn, Will, and Breeze try to hold out. After the storm, Corbyn surrenders while Breeze rescues the trapped Will. Back at the Treasury facility when Corbyn and the remaining mercenaries arrive, Perkins breaks the deal to release Moreno and kills him in revenge for the deaths of Jaqi and Xander.

As the eye of the storm passes, Perkins and his men take the money, using three of the facility’s trailers, along with Corbyn. Will and Breeze follow them. With the eyewall behind them, Will and Breeze take over a truck. After a brief struggle with Perkins, the eyewall sucks all the money out of one of the trucks and then the truck itself. Perkins is then killed after his own detached trailer crushes him. When Breeze’s truck engine backfires and catches fire, Will and Corbyn transfer him to their truck. However, as they attempt to rescue Sasha and Frears, they are sucked into the storm.
